It took me awhile to stop switching around categories. I think I've finally got it ;>). Since my objective for 2008 is to read as many of my own books as possible, I've picked categories that would fit the books I have on my bookshelves already. Here are my 8 categories and the corresponding books: (duplicates are in blue, other challenges are in red, * marks books I’ll have to get from the library—all the others come from my shelves. There are only 6 books that aren't mine!)

after much deliberation, i have settled on these eight categories:

1. Oh, To Be Young Again! (some cross-listing with the Young Adult Challenge)

2. Escapism Reads (some cross-listing with the Series Challenge, the First in a Series Challenge, and the Cardathon)
   eight books from the genres of mystery, suspense thriller, science fiction, fantasy, chick lit, or maybe even romance.


3. In Their Shoes (cross-listing with the "In Their Shoes" Challenge)
   eight memoirs, biographies, or autobiographies. the "long list" of my picks is here.


4. Bee Bonanza
   eight books from the 2008 Beehive Book Nominees. (the Beehive Awards are sponsored by the Children's Literature Association of Utah (CLAU). awards are given in five categories: Children's Picture Book, Children's Fiction Book, Children's Informational Book, Young Adults' Book, and Children's Poetry Book. winners are chosen from the nominated books by the children of Utah, who vote for their favorite books. a list of the 2008 nominees can be found here.) these are my preliminary picks (in alphabetical order):

i've done the math, and if i'm going to be successful with this challenge, i'm going to need to read at least five of these books each month (or a little more than one book a week) throughout the year. as of today i've read almost sixty-seven books this year - which is at a pace for a total of about seventy-nine for the whole year, or about one-and-a-half books a week. even with the addition of a handful of additional books for other reasons, it seems do-able. (i think.)

My lists for the 888 challenge

Here they are! Already revised once since being added to my post.....I am so eager for 2008 to start now, so I can start reading my chosen ones! They are piled on one of my shelves, each in their little group. I made a change already because I realized I had left off mysteries and fantasies as a category each, which are both the type of book I read most frequently......I want my challenge books here to be books I am going to read, plus books I want to read, plus books I've been meaning to read.....that way I will finish this challenge! And not try to make myself read books I feel I should read, which I have a bad habit of thinking I need to do.....

Hi everyone! I'm excited about this challenge. I made my categories, but since 2008 is still 4 months away, I think I'll hold off on listing specific books yet.

Categories:

1. Children's literature. This can overlap my plan to continue reading Newbery winners as part of the Newbery Project.

2. Pulitzer Prize winners. This will go along with my plan to continue being part of the Pulitzer project.

3. New York Times Notable Books. This is in hopes that there'll be another Notable Books challenge like there was this year.

4. Printz Award winners or Honor books: This less well-known award is the equivalent of the Newbery for Young Adult literature. This can overlap my plan to host a Printz challenge sometime in the near future.

5. Booker Prize books: I want to read so many of these that I might want to host a challenge for them, too, or maybe I'll just read them on my own.

6. New in 2007/2008 books: So that I leave plenty of room for exciting new books I'll want to read.

7. TBR books: So I can keep working on taming that beast.

8. Graphic novels: My husband has the entire Sandman series, and I have criminally left them all unread except the first book. Plus I love graphic novels in general, and there'll be others I want to read.

As you can see, I am a bit of a history and fantasy nut. I do reserve the right to add and change if the books are too horrible to finish! And, I can't remember the names of some of the books in my TBR list that I've included as part of the challenge - but I will be updating with that soon.

Of course, I just combined the audiobooks with the regular books so I could knit and read at the same time.
